Digital Audio Broadcasting, DAB, existerar en struktur av digitalradio, som använder MPEG1 Audio Layer 2- eller AAC+-formatet. Det finns idag även tre andra världsstandarder till marksänd digital radio godkända av Internationella teleunionen (ITU): amerikanska HD-Radio (IBOC), japanska ISDB-T samt europeiska DRM/DRM+.

DAB-sändningar sker i block, eller ensembler, vilka motsvarar en frekvens. I varenda block finns ett antal kanaler, inom Sverige vanligen åtta. Då sker sändningen med bithastigheten kbit/s. tillsammans fler kanaler i identisk block reducerar bithastigheten per kanal samt därmed kvaliteten.

Sändningen innehåller programinformation liksom kan framträda i mottagarens display, mot exempel sändarnamn, block, kanalnamn och vilket musikstycke likt spelas. Dessutom är kanalerna märkta tillsammans med programtyp (exempelvis nyheter, jazz, barn), sålunda att lyssnaren kan söka efter sändningar av ett viss typ.

Sändningen förmå också innehålla olika typer av aviseringar till lyssnaren. Även meddelandena är märkta, så DAB-mottagaren kan ställas in till att bara ta emot meddelanden från en viss typ samt på en visst tungomål. On 23 August , the Swedish Press and Broadcasting Authority [Myndigheten för press, radio och tv / MPRT] awarded seven new national and one regional licence for digital commercial radio, valid from 1 September to 31 July  Malmö-based Mad Men Media has been granted five national licences. DB Media in Staffanstorp receives a national licence for the new channel Dansbandskanalen Klassiker. DB Media also receives a regional licence in Skåne for Guldkanalen Country. Skärgårdsradion, which already has a regional licence in Stockholm, can now broadcast nationally.

On 23 February , the Swedish Ministry of Culture announced that a parliamentary committee will propose how the public service remit should be regulated from onwards and what should be included in the remit during the licensing period   This includes the possible expansion of DAB broadcasting.
